Megantic Business – How This Website Got Its Name

My father never knew his father, my grandfather. My father only had one photograph of him.

Father moved many times to better himself and the family and we lived in various parts of the UK.

I was only young at the time but on one of our homes there appeared one day a bronze plaque. This had the name Megantic inscribed on it. Now our home not only had a number but a name as well. My mother never liked the house being named Megantic and as we continued to move around we never did have that name again. The plaque got relegated to the shed and moved with us wherever we went.

When I was deciding what to call this website the name Megantic came to mind.

Megantic

You see Megantic was a steam ship, the SS Megantic also know as the RMS Megantic. RMS standing for Royal Mail Ship due to the fact that most ships in those days transported the mail around the world.

The significance of all this is that my grandfather served on the Megantic. It was a cruise liner mainly on the Liverpool to Montreal route but also later New York.

Megantic Businesss seemed the perfect fit.

German Submarine Attack

The Megantic was attacked on 24th April 1917 by German U-boat UB-43 during World War 1, but survived.

It was fortunate because the record of UB 43 shows that it sank 45 ships (total 114,323 tons) during WW1 and took two ships as prizes. It surrendred 20th November 1918.

Megantic is the ship on which my grandfather died on board and was buried at sea.

Dr Crippen

It is the ship on which the murderer Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen was returned together with his mistress to the UK. Dr Crippen stood trial, was found guilty and hung on 23rd November 1910. 

History was made as he was the first person to be caught by that then new fangled means of electronic communication of the time – wireless telegraphy.

How things have changed! For those that have them can you imagine life without having your Smartphone?
